Mission: We make a healthy difference in communities by advancing health equity and improving the conditions where people live, learn, work and play.
Across our state, unfair and unjust barriers keep many people from achieving their best health. Social factors like access to good jobs, early education, and health care coverage considerably influence health outcomes. Our goal is to invest in communities that experience significant health inequities, with partners who have the greatest potential for impact.
We believe focusing on the social determinants of health can reduce barriers and positively impact future health. The social determinants of health are central to our work and encompass aspects of individual and community life that affect health in complex ways.
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation was established in 1986. The Foundation has a unique focus on social determinants of health — we’re working to change the core factors that negatively impact future health, long before the need for medical care.
Communities across Minnesota inform our mission and grantmaking. Our grantees are our partners, and we incorporate their insights into every aspect of our work. Informed by research and the work of our grantees, the Foundation is poised to help communities overcome barriers to achieve health equity.
The work of the Foundation exemplifies the mission of the entire Blue Cross organization. We are committed to achieving health equity and moving health forward together.
